Always be on the lookout for interesting items that could be used for neckerchief slides. Maybe it is a refrigerator magnet or a kid's meal toy or a key chain trinket, a plaster or wooden animal, or an object you find in a craft store or garage sale or flea market. Don't forget party supplies stores and all those wonderful trinkets that salesmen give you, that you don't know what to do with. Once on a bike ride, I found a boot from a doll that became a slide. Look especially for items that have served their useful purpose but instead of throwing them out, reuse them as neckerchief slides. If you look hard enough you will find all kinds of unique and interesting objects.

How about making a slide from part of some common object (like a drain or heating element from a blow dryer or the armature from a motor). Let people guess what it is. This could start a "how it works" discussion.

Many found objects will look better if they are mounted on a background like leather, craft foam, or wood. Use hot glue to glue a PVC ring to the back of the background. The object can be fastened to the background using Goop(tm), wire, or plastic tie wraps.

Found items are great for special occasions such as Blue and Gold Banquets. Try looking in dollar stores or stores that sell party decorations for something related to the theme of the occasion.
