I am a list maker. It just makes things easier. I have a list of things that I take on runs or to races. If you forget something like nutrition or hydration or shoes it can turn a routine outing into an uncomfortable or impossible situation. Having a list gives you the peace of mind that you are ready for your race or run. That way you can relax and get a good night's sleep without worrying if you've forgotten something.

I break my list into three parts, but you may have other things to add to these lists:
1) stuff I am going to wear and things I might consider wearing depending on the conditions,
2) stuff that I’ll need during my workout, and
3) stuff for before and after.

Once you have everything together and are ready to leave, check your list one final time just to make sure.

I have a small bucket for my pre-run sport drink, run hydration, post-run water, post-run snack, and nutrition. This makes it easier to carry and it’s not as apt to roll around during the drive. After a run I use the bucket to hold empty bottles, trash, and wet clothes.

Then I'll have a separate bag for all the stuff I am going to use today like a GPS watch, sweatband, flashlight, hat, goo ...

I also take along a gym bag with extra stuff that I frequently use. I organize it with gallon size clear plastic bags - one for stuff to keep you warm, one for hot weather, one for dark ... This makes it easier to locate stuff quickly.

If you are traveling to a race, you'll have to get everything ready before you leave.

The night before get as much of your stuff ready early and check it against the lists. In the morning you may not be as coherent, so check the list one final time before leaving.
