Some people run races just for the bling or swag they get for participating. Bling is the finishers medal or sometimes a belt buckle that you are awarded. The swag are all the extra goodies that you get like a bag, hat, shirt, jacket, etc.

You almost always get a shirt. Technical shirts are the best. Medals are becoming more and more popular even for 5K races. And race directors are constantly dreaming up new ideas to catch people's attention.

These are your trophies. Wear or display them with pride. I always enjoy looking around at people's shirts, especially at races, to see where they have raced.

Face it, only a few individuals win races and a few more win medals in their age groups. If you want to try to win a medal either overall or age group, try running in smaller races associated with a small city or school or special cause. If a race offers two or more distances, the more capable or experienced runners will frequently run the longer distance. Entering the shorter distance may put you in contention even though it may have more participants. Check prior year results to see how many participants normally run it.

You might want to purchase or make something for displaying your trophies and race swag. I like to save my race bibs. On the back of the bib write the race name, date, time, and finish place overall, in gender, and age group. Also note if the race was a personal record or PR. You could also include a note about anything special or significant concerning the race.

The hanger for these displays needs to be pretty sturdy because the medals can get quite heavy.
