Invented by Bart Yasso, they are a pretty accurate predictor of how a person will perform in a marathon. They are usually done on a track. They consist of an 800 meter hard run followed by the same amount of time at a recovery pace. So if it takes you 3:10 to do the 800 meters, do 3:10 at a recovery pace and then repeat. Start out doing 4 and work your way up to 10 repeats. Try to be consistent with the time/speed of each segment.

When you can do 10 repeats then the time it takes you to do the 800 in minutes and seconds is about what your marathon time will be in hours and minutes. So if you can do the 800 meters in 3 minutes 10 seconds, your predicted marathon finish time would be 3 hours and 10 minutes.

Benefits: Builds strength, speed, endurance, increases aerobic capacity; develop good, more efficient form; kick at the finish.
